Palumeu Cultural Adventure

You fly from the local airfield Zorg & Hoop to the airstrip near the Amerindian village Palumeu, approximately 75 minutes south of Paramaribo. Upon arrival you are received by our coworkers. Our holiday resort Palumeu has the same name as the village next to it, which is inhabited by the Trio and Wajana Amerindians. After checking into your huts, our coworkers take you to the beautiful Palawa Island for a picnic lunch. You are also able to swim in the cool river. In the afternoon you’ll visit the Amerindian village of Palumeu together with our guide. Here you will observe the current lifestyle and the applied arts of these ancient inhabitants of the Amazon forest. In the resort you’ll recognize our eco foundations. Our coworkers are skilled Trio and Wajana Amerindians; your jungle lodge is built in the traditional style. The brisk evenings make an air-conditioner or a fan redundant, but you do have the comfort of a “klamboe” (mosquito net). You’ll spend the nights with ambient lighting and your meals are made in the local style, with mostly local ingredients. The first night the guide will introduce you to the Amerindian culture.

You’ve most likely been awaken to the sounds of the call of the howler monkeys. After breakfast you’ll leave for an exciting day towards Poti Hill, a granite hill which you’ll climb. During the korjaal trip in the Tapanahony river and a walk, you will become acquainted with the tropical rainforest. The guide will tell you about the flora and fauna and on the top of the Poti Hill you are rewarded with a spectacular view of the forest. During your journey back towards Palumeu (where lunch will be served), you might see animals who live in the territory, such as otters, monkeys and various birds. High in the air you’ll probably see passing Aras (Macaws) or parrots and perhaps a toucan. In the afternoon you will be visited by the best archer of the village, who will gladly teach you about the finer points of the art. You may try it to see how you’ll do.

Our coworkers will bring you by korjaal to the Makuba waterfalls for a wonderful day of enjoyment and relaxation. You may swim in the river, relax under the waterfalls, take hikes which enlighten you further about the trees, plants and animals or just lazy about in a hammock, and then later enjoy the barbeque for lunch. At night our guide will take you on a night trip over the river. Carry your flashlight. Maybe you’ll spot the red eyes of the caymans or the eyes of another jungle resident. Day 4 After breakfast you’ll go to the village for an extensive village tour. Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to buy handmade souvenirs. After lunch you depart for Paramaribo. For the travelers that have chosen the 4 night program (Monday – Friday)

In the morning your guide will take you on a jungle outing. You will gain more knowledge about the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest and you’ll visit farming plots, where the guide will explain traditional farming. In the afternoon you may again paddle in a dug-out canoe, swim or relax from your hammock while enjoying the peace and sounds of the tropical rainforest.

After breakfast you’ll go to the village for an extensive village tour. Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to buy handmade souvenirs. After lunch you depart for Paramaribo
