It is also accessible by road (190 Km) combined with a boat trip (3 – 4 hours). The main office of the reservation and the tourist lodges are on the Fungo Island in the middle of the Coppename river.
The Raleigh falls derived its name from the vast waterfalls and rapids that are found around the area of the island. The area is internationally renowned for its abundance of monkeys and birds. The reservation is home to the Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola rupicola), to toucans, macaws, parrots and 400 different bird species. For example you’ll see the weaver birds in the trees, a gregarious bird that often breeds colonially and builds nests with an average of almost 1 meter.
Another interesting sight is the Voltzberg. Walking through the jungle you’ll get closer to its top which extends 150 meters above the tops of the trees. After 3 hours you’ll see the green blanket of the surrounding rainforest which will leave you amazed by the Suriname interior. Although the path is fairly passable, the trip does require you to be in shape because of the humid climate and the steep parts. Along the way it is highly possible for you to see deer, turtles, monkeys and birds.
Your experience is not complete without spending the night in a hammock between the trees at the foot of the mountain. In the base camp you are surrounded by the sounds of life in the forest: monkeys, tree frogs and other nocturnal animals.**Accommodations are not air conditioned.
